The country of Château Gontier, shining by nature!

The tree gets fruits because all along the seasons, as well as man does it here: it has respected its roots and its history.

Resolutely turned towards the future but proud of its past, the county of Chateau-Gontier has not blown the steps he did not make noise for nothing! No it has been built carefully, firmly all along the years. Thanks to the will of its political, economic, cultural makers... This county has forged its own identity.

Walking in our countryside, visitors will discover with happiness some characteristics about our region: the town and the country Château-Gontier have been ambassadors of the Telethon 2009 and shooted by the TV cameras of France Télévision (only four cities in France can claim it).

Château-Gontier is also a candidate for the label "Territoires Gourmands", and it will also host the national convention of the 100 cities most beautiful corners of France in 2011, or even partner in several festivals, including a new major event around comics in October. National conferences and general meetings nationwide of the "Jeune Chambre Economique". The Lions or the Rotary Club are also held here regularly, allowing hundreds of delegates to decide on the spot of the sincerity of these statements!

Third city in Mayenne, Château-Gontier, millenary city has an exceptionally rich heritage and is a floral city awarded by the Grand Prix and its 4 Flowers. It is the central city of a community of 24 boroughs.

The "Mayenne", the river crossing through this charming country town district is definitely a muste-see. As for heritage, the region also boasts about the beautiful halls of St Denis d'Anjou, whose 500th anniversary was celebrated in 2009.

The town, composed by Château-Gontier-Bazouges, Azé and Saint-Fort, gathers 17,000 people.

In St Fort, you can discover "Le Refuge de l'Arche". Unique in Europe, it hosts since 35 years, a diverse wildlife. They are now 1,500 species in this vast paradise of 14 hectares. First touristic site of the county, the Refuge is sponsored by Michel Drucker, its Honorary President is Robert Hossein. Near the Refuge, the traditional chocolate factory Roland Réauté opened its own museum.

In the suburbs (or surroundings), the beautiful Ursuline's Convent with its school of music, dance &  visual arts, its theater, and its 'Scene Nationale'  (one of 70 of France), the Tourist Office of South Mayenne is a must see as well as the cobbled streets, old markets or the new downtown, and houses with wood.

In summer, this heritage is highlighted by the "nocturnes theatralisées du couvent", tours of the city. Also to be planned for your program, a festival of street theater "The Chalibaude" late June, the fair of Saint-Fiacre in August and a partnership with the International Festival of the Scoop of Angers...

Economically speaking, the region is acknowledged for its diversity boasting jewels like the "Fromageries Perreault" (making chesse like : "Chamois d'Or", "Fol Epi" ...), the luxury leather goods brand Longchamp, Le Joint Français, etc ...

Each Thursday take place two markets, the calves (veal) market, the first European market of the kind.

Markets are also organized on Saturdays in the suburbs, on Sundays in Bazouges and on Tuesdays evening in Azé.
